Chapter 7

“I said I’m fine!” Kyle yelled at the dietician as she gathered her things and left the room.

Lay-Lay shook her head at him. “You did not have to talk to her like that.”

Kyle looked at her, sucked his teeth, and shrugged his shoulders. He had been acting like such a butthole since finding out his leg was gone. She had told him a few days ago when he woke up, and he still had the same little attitude.

“Kyle, people aren’t going to continue to just let you talk to them any kind of way. I understand you’re upset, but you could be a little nicer.”

“You understand? Tell me Shalaya, just how in the hell would you understand when you still have both of your fucking legs?”

Lay-Lay looked at Kyle for a minute, trying to calm herself down. She didn’t know who Kyle thought he was yelling at. She had been taking his rude ass remarks for the last couple of days like a champ, but this shit was starting to get on her nerves. If the situation had been any different, he would have gotten fucked up a long time ago. Crossing her arms over her chest, Lay-Lay shifted in her seat and stared at him.

“Fuck you looking at?”

“I’m looking at your ugly ass.”

“If you got a problem with the way I treat people, then you can leave too.”

This got Lay-Lay’s attention. Never, in all the years she’d known him, had he talked to her like that. They’d gotten into it a few times, but he never spoke to her this harsh. It hurt her feelings to hear him talking to her like that, but she had a trick for him, because she wasn’t the one.

“Listen here Kyle, clearly you’re mad about the loss of your leg, and that’s cool. You’re entitled to that, but somewhere along the way you must have lost your fucking mind too. I am not the muthafucking one. If you want to bark out orders, I would advise you to call some of your soldiers up here and yell at their young asses. Get fucked up talking to me like that.”

“Man Shalaya, go ahead with all that noise, I really ain’t trying to hear it.”

“Oh you don’t want to hear it?”

Kyle pulled his covers up to his stomach and looked at her. “Nope.”

“Cool.” Lay-Lay grabbed her purse, keys, phone, and headed for the door. Kyle had her fucked all the way up.

She could understand that getting used to his condition was going to take some time, but she wasn’t about to take the backlash for it. She had been more than sympathetic with his loss, but he was taking things to a totally different level. He’d been screaming at everybody that had come to see him. He down right refused for Morgan and Jade to come in. He went on and on about them not seeing his leg, like that mattered to anybody. Lay-Lay shook her head as she thought about how upset Morgan had been when he told the nurses not to let her in.
